GHS—HUTTO

By GALEN WELLNICKI

Not describing Georgetown’s 78-19 victory over Hutto Tuesday night in District 19-5A action as a total one-sided performance would be less than accurate.
In improving to 2-0 in 19-5A and 9-5 on the season, Georgetown dominated play on the Lady Hippos court. The Lady Eagles led 25-6 after the opening quarter, 40-8 at the half and 61-14 after three periods.

The Lady Eagles’ lead reached more than 40 points with 5:56 to go in the third on the first of five second-half 3-pointers by junior point guard Josie Weirich. The advantage climbed past 50 points on Weirich’s third trey. Weirich ended up playing most of the contest as senior starter Brooke Elliott was forced to leave the contest early with what was described as a “stomach bug.”

The victory left the Cedar Park (3-0) and Georgetown (2-0) as the only unbeaten teams in the district after just three playing dates. The Timberwolves bounced Bastrop from the 19-5A unbeaten list, 53-51, in a battle of state-ranked teams on the Lady Bears’ hardwoods.

The Lady Eagles return home at 7 p.m. Friday to face Elgin, which surprised Bastrop Cedar Creek, 42-37 on Tuesday, will bring a 1-2 district mark to Eagle Gym. The night also will feature a reunion honoring the 1995-1996 Class 5A state semifinalist team, who posted a 34-3 mark and included some of the brightest names in Lady Eagles’ history.

Tuesday’s game did earn spots in the record book. The 19 points allowed is one of the top 22 performances since Rhonda Farney took over the program in the 1988-89 season and Weirich’s five 3-pointers moves her into a spot on the all-time single-game list in that category. The most treys being eight by Natalie Tucker, who will be one of those honored on Friday.

“We started well, kept our focus and played hard,” Farney said. “I was impressed with Dee Day and E.J. (Emily Jones) inside. Taylor (Elliott) handled the pressure well as did Maddie Vickers and Josie stepped in well for Brooke.

“In our state championship season (2013) we had some games like this and they played a role in our development. We were able to get playing time for everybody and they all contributed.”
The 6-foot-1 senior Day, who scored 12 points in the first quarter, finished the game as the Lady Eagles’ leading scorer with 19 points. Jones, Weirich and freshman Emery Herman added 16, 15 and 10, respectively, as GHS put down 30 of its 53 shots and hit 11 of 13 free throws. “EJ had the perfect game going 6 for 6 from the field and 4 for 4 from the free throw line,” Farney commented. “Emery posted a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Dee continued her dominance inside. Jaelyn continues to be a force on both ends of the court. It was comforting to have Josie come in for Brooke and knock down five treys,” Farney continued.

Georgetown posted a 35-13 edge on the boards with Herman grabbing 10. She also led the Lady Eagles in assists and steals with five each. Day, Jaelyn Knight and Jones pitched in 8, 7 and 6 rebounds.

Defensively, GHS posted 19 steals and six field goals in just 25 attempts. Codee Terry led Hutto with 10 points, including two 3-pointers in the third quarter.
In a refreshing change from many games this season only 18 total fouls were called and 19 free throws taken.

Quietly, without fanfare, Farney moved from seventh to sixth on the all-time list of wins by a girls basketball coach as recognized by the National Federation of State High Schools Associations when she won No. 1,064 when the Lady Eagles bested Lubbock Coronado, 51-33, this past Friday in their final pool game of the 38th annual Jack Frost Tournament. Farney’s win total now stands at 1,067. She passed Thednal Hill, who won 1,058 at Hardy Highlands, AZ., from 1952-1986. The fifth coach on the list is Lamar Rogers of Clarkrange, TN. He had 1,121 wins entering this season.

In sub-varsity action, the GHS JV took a 50-36 victory after overcoming a slow start. Sophomore post Jade Smith led the way with 14 points and the Freshman Blue won 56-25 with Hailey Smith and Maya Perry scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively. Both sub-varsities are 2-0 in 19-5A action.
