Georgetown’s Lady Eagles extended their victory streak to nine games Tuesday night with a 52-32 victory over St. John’s Catholic Prep of Buckeystown, Md., in their opening game in the Carolina Invitational at Charleston, S.C.
The victory improved the Lady Eagles’ record to 14-5 and handed the previously unbeaten Vikings their first loss in seven games. St. John’s entered the game ranked sixth in Maryland in their classification by Max Preps.
Georgetown should face a tougher test at 4:30 p.m. today when they play Holy Innocents Episcopal of Atlanta. The Golden Bears improved their record to 10-1 in their tournament opener Tuesday with a 47-41 win over Northwood Academy, S.C. Holy Innocents is ranked 13th in Georgia by Max Preps.
The Lady Eagles will play Northwood in their tournament finale at 4:30 p.m. CST Thursday.
The Lady Eagles, who hadn’t practiced or played since last Tuesday’s District 19-5A win over Rouse, led 25-15 at the half and then outscored the Vikings, 27-17, in the second half.
“We played very good defense,” GHS head coach Rhonda Farney. “We did well considering the long layoff and having spent most of the day yesterday traveling. It was a very physical game. I don’t think there wasn’t anything that wasn’t heavily contested.”
Dee Day, a 6-foot-1 senior post, led GHS with 16 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Senior guard Taylor Elliott was the only other player in double digits with 12 points. The Lady Eagles made 20 of their 36 shots from the floor and posted a 25-22 edge on the boards.
Georgetown held the Vikings to just 13 successes in 37 attempts from the floor, including just two of 10 from beyond the arch. The Lady Eagles also recorded 26 steals.
