The Georgetown Lady Eagles may be more inexperienced than usual going into this season with just one starter returning, but coach Rhonda Farney has crafted another schedule that should have her team prepared for the heart of the 16-game District 19-5A race and a a desired successful playoff run.
“We are very excited about our schedule.” Farney said. “As always, we believe that to be the best, one has to play the best. This year is no exception. For the 27th year, we are opening with (6-A) powerhouse Waco Midway.
“We are also playing state-ranked Burnet, Pflugerville, and Victoria East. In addition, we will play Houston Wheatley at Delmar Fieldhouse, the site for the Region III-5A Basketball Tournament. We would love to think that we could advance to the tournament again this year.”
In addition to those pre-district tests that will begin with the battle at Midway on Monday, Nov. 6, Georgetown will play in three tournaments — the Eaton Tournament in Fort Worth (Nov. 9-11), its own Jack Frost Invitational (Nov. 30-Dec. 2) and the Albany, La. Tournament (Dec. 27-29).
Eaton is a new school in the Northwest ISD and Albany is located just west of Hammond, La., in what is considered the Baton Rouge metro statistical area. It is approximately 60 miles from New Orleans.
Farney sees the Jack Frost Tournament’s 16-team field as one of the toughest that the Lady Eagles have had to face.
The field is headed by defending 4A state tournament and JFT champion Argyle and last year’s 4A state semifinalists and Jack Frost runner-up Liberty Hill and its 6-foot-7 second-team Street & Smith preseason All-American choice Sedona Prince. Argyle bested the Panthers, 34-26, in last season’s finals.
Other teams in the field are Amarillo Tascosa, Austin Bowie, Belton. Cibolo Steele, Fort Worth Trimble Tech, Houston Westbury Christian, Killeen, Leander, Lubbock Coronado, San Antonio Incarnate Word, San Antonio Veterans Memorial (the new high school in the Converse Judson ISD) San Marcos and Vandegrift.
GHS, Coronado and Westbury Christian also are former Jack Frost champions in the field.
The Lady Eagles, who reached the Region III-5A finals last season, will have their games with traditional 6A power Pflugerville (Nov. 14), Burnet (Nov. 17) and Victoria East (Nov. 20) at home and will travel to Houston’s Delmar Field House, site of the regional event, on Nov. 24, to face Wheatley.
The Lady Eagles, who have the opening-round bye in nine-team 19-5A schedule, will begin district play on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at home against Pflugerville Connally. The race will end Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Bastrop Cedar Creek. GHS will play six district games prior to the Christmas break and will finish with the final 10 games in January and early February.
The schedule calls for Georgetown to play five games at Eagle Gym in the first-round of 19-5A action and three in the second round.
Both of the Lady Eagles games with cross-town rival East View will be doubleheaders with the boys varsity teams. They will face the Patriots at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at East View and then collide again at Eagle Gym at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26.
Farney said that she expected the 19-5A race to be very challenging for her team with Rouse, Cedar Park, East View and Hutto all fielding strong teams in the race for the district four state playoff positions. The state playoffs are scheduled to begin on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 12-13.
In preparation for the season, the Lady Eagles will scrimmage at Austin Westlake on Saturday, Oct. 28, and at Pflugerville Hendrickson on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
