TABC STATE RANKINGS | Lady Eagles Basketball

By GALEN WELLNICKI Georgetown’s Lady Eagles will open the basketball campaign as the state’s eighth-ranked Class 5A team in preseason rankings announced Monday by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
The Lady Eagles, who reached the Region III-5A finals last season, are the only District 19-5A team in the organization’s Top 25, which is headed, in order, by defending state champion Canyon, last year’s state runner-up Mansfield Timberview and state semifinalist Mont Blevieu Barbers Hill.
Barbers Hill bested GHS, 55-43, in the Region III finals last year at Delmar Field House in Houston behind the lead of 6-foot-5 junior Charli Collier, who will return with the mantle of being named the preseason national player of the year by Street & Smith’s 2017-18 Basketball Yearbook.
Other schools listed ahead of the Lady Eagles in the 5A rankings are Amarillo, Frisco Liberty, Corpus Christi Flour Bluff and Austin SFA.
The Lady Eagles have two state-ranked teams on their non-district schedule — not including tournaments. Those opponents are Pflugerville, No. 3 in 6A, and Houston Wheatley, No. 8 in 4A.
Seven of the 16 teams in the girls division of the Jack Frost Tournament will open the season with TABC state rankings, including Georgetown. The other are Liberty Hill, No. 1 in 4A; Argyle, No. 3 in 4A; Cibolo Steele, No. 15 in 6A; Fort Worth Trimble Tech, No. 23 in 5A; San Antonio Incarnate Word, No. 6 in TAPPS 6A; and Houston Westbury Christian, No. 3 in TAPPS 5A.
