Eat 28 turnovers in approximately an hour and 15 minutes and you’d have a major case of indigestion. That some number of turnovers on the basketball court by their team would be hard to stomach for about any coach — Georgetown’s Rhonda Farney included.
The Lady Eagles coach was “frustrated” as her Lady Eagles had that number of divots during their 41-32 loss to Fort Worth Trimble Tech Saturday in the Gold Bracket semifinals of the 39th annual Jack Frost Invitational Tournament at Eagle Gym.
“As much as I was proud of our performance in our recent wins, I was disappointed with our mental effort today,” Farney said as the Lady Eagles’ season record fell to 8-5. “We had so many opportunities in the first half that we should have been ahead by 10 at halftime. It’s definitely a game we should have won.”
The Lady Eagles led 23-20 at the half despite making 14 turnovers in the first 16 minutes, including a series of errant passes.
Trimble Tech went on to be blown out in the finals by last year’s JFK runner-u p Liberty Hill, 68-39. Other girls champions were Argyle in the Silver Bracket and Amarillo Tascosa in the Bronze Bracket.
Farney is hoping that the Lady Eagles will have their game back — both physically and mentally — when they return to District 19-5A competition against Hutto, 1-1 in district, at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Eagle Gym.  The Lady Hippos have lost to Cedar Park, 56-43, and beat Bastrop Cedar Creek, 72-33, in district.
The Lady Eagles are 1-0 in district. After having the opening-night bye in 19-5A, GHS downed Pflugerville Connally, 51-41,in their iniital 19-5A test last Tuesday.
A bucket by sophomore forward McCall Hampton gave the Lady Eagles a 27-25 lead over Trimble Tech with two minutes and 53 seconds to go in the third period, but a 3-pointer by Alexcia Fountain put  the Bulldogs ahead for good at 28-27 with 1:59 to go in the quarter.
From that point forward, Trimble Tech outscored Georgetown, 14-5, during the remainder of the game. The Lady Eagles only points during that period were a 3-pointer by senior guard Josie Weirich and two free throws by junior post Jaelyn Knight.
In edition to the turnovers, Georgetown had shooting problems, making only 11 of 31 field goals and six of 12 free throws.  Knight led GHS scoring with 12 points. The second-best scoring totals were six points by Weirich and Hampton.
The Lady Eagles did take a 27-22 edge on the boards with the 5-foot-9 Hampton pulling down 12 rebounds for the third time this season. Although she didn’t score, senior Maddie Vickers added five assists, three rebounds and four steals.
Bre’auna Smith and Anna McDowell paced Trimble Tech with scoring totals of 11 and 10 points, respectively. Smith also chipped in four of the Lady Bulldogs’ seven blocks.
Knight was the Lady Eagles’ only selection on the all-tournament team.
Despite the last-minute withdrawl of Houston Westbury Christian from the Jack Frost that cost the Lady Eagles at least one game and the poorer-than-expected performance against Trimble Tech, now 6-6 on the season, Farney was pleased with the tournament.
“I want to thank (tournament director) Milton VanDusen and the Jack Frost committee for making this tournament the awesome thing that it is along with our primary sponsors Farmers Insurance (Jana and Jaime Briggs), Minuteman Press (Ty and Crystal Gibson) and Hat Creek Burger Company.”
She also had praise for prime booster David Daniel, the Sun City Booster Club and the outstanding concessions along with the efforts of the Georgetown program’s parents.
On the sub-varsity level, the Georgetown JV downed Pflugerville, 40-27, to win the team title of the Nsancy Walling Pflugerville JV Tournament. The Freshman Blue finished third in the Nancy Walling Pflugerville Freshman Tournament, beating Hutto, 33-18.
“Great Effort by everyone!,” GHS JV coach Kellye Richardson said. “Proud of the way the girls are playing especially on the defensive end.”
Mercedes Robledo and Haily Smith led the Lady Eagles JV with nine points each.
Graci Harris scored 11 points to lead the Freshman Blue and Skylar Neugent added nine points.
