The Georgetown Lady Eagles will be surrounded by old faces during the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 basketball seasons in District 18-5A as the University Interscholastic League announced its realignment for the next two school years on Thursday.
Coach Rhonda Farney’s crew will be joined by cross-town rival East View, Bastrop, Bastrop Cedar Creek, Elgin, Hutto and Manor in the new seven-team district. Gone from the current District 19-5A alignment will be the three other teams that have clinched berths in this season’s playoffs — Cedar Park, Rouse and Pflugerville Connally.
Six of the seven members of the new 18-5A were in 19-5A the past two years. Manor is dropping down from Class 6A, but has been in Georgetown’s district in recent years.
Volleyball districts in 5A also will be the same as basketball for the next two years.
However, Georgetown football district alignment will differ drastically from basketball.
Under the UIL’s new plan to divide 5A football competition into large school (Division I) and small-school (Division II) groupings prior to the start of the season. GHS will compete in a much different — and potentially tougher — District 11-5A in football with Cedar Park, Rouse, Hutto, Manor, Pflugerville and Pflugerville Connally. Pflugerville also is dropping down from 6A after losing numbers with the opening of Pflugerville Weiss this year.
Going on the basis of district records through Tuesday’s 19-5A games, the Lady Eagles will be losing three opponents which have posted a combined 33-9 mark. Not counting Georgetown’s 12-2 mark, they will be joined in 19-5A by five team that are combined 19-53 in 19-5A. Manor, currently playing in six-team 14-6A, owns a 4-4 record in an alignment with Del Valle, San Marcos, Austin Bowie, Austin Anderson and Austin Akins.
Teams coming out of Georgetown’s 18-5A basketball alignment next season will face a potentially strong 17-5A in bi-district that lists Pflugerville (down from 6A), Cedar Park, Rouse, Glenn, Marble Falls, Pflugerville, Pflugerville Connally and Pflugerville Weiss. Pflugerville has been ranked as high as third in 6A this season and Cedar Park and Rouse are currently ranked in 5A along with Georgetown.
The UIL lists 253 schools competining in 5A basketball next season with an exrollment ranging between 1,150 to 2,159 students. The football split in 5A is large school (Division I), 1,840 to 2,189, and samall school (Division II), 1,150 to 1,839.
