Nothing official will be determined in the District 18-5A girls basketball race, but the Georgetown Lady Eagles can grab a distinct advantage in the standings this week if they sweep their home matchups with third-place Hutto and co-leader East View. Coach Rhonda Farney’s Lady Eagles, coming off a disappointing 0-3 showing in the State Farm Classic in Murfreesboro, Tenn., regained their footing this past Friday, despite a slow start, with a 64-21 victory over last-place Bastrop Cedar Creek. The win kept GHS in a 4-0 deadlock with the arch-rival Patriots, who returned to district action Friday with a 35-25 win over Bastrop. It was a total domination for GHS as it outscored Cedar Creek, 222-38, in the three games. In addition to the 43-point varsity victory, the JV claimed a 73-13 triumph and the Freshman Blue dominated, 85-4, holding Cedar Creek scoreless in the second half.
In Tuesday’s 7 p.m. battle with Hutto, the Lady Eagles will be facing a group of Lady Hippos, who stand 3-1 in district after its 72-47 win over Elgin. The Lady Hippos stand 11-17 on the year with their only district loss was 48-46 to East View. They are led by 5-foot-9 junior forward Manuella Shomba, who is averaging 15.2 points and 6.1 rebounds a game. “We’re glad to be back home,” Farney said of Friday’s win at Cedar Creek. “We had really good workouts the last two days. Next week is really a big week for us. I also was pleased with the way our JV and freshman played.”
Friday was a busy day for Farney as she left immediately after the 1:30 p.m. game with Cedar Creek to scout East View’s 35-25 win over Bastrop and then move on to watch Hutto crunch Elgin. On Friday, the Georgetown and East View girls will play at 6 p.m. in the opening game of a girls/boys doubleheader.
Georgetown struggled to an 11-7 first-quarter lead over Cedar Creek, but then came out in the second period and shut out the hometown Lady Eagles while scoring 27 points in a game in which Farney substituted freely. She played all 12 players on the active roster. In the girls quarter, GHS outscored Cedar Park, 15-6, in the third quarter before finishing with an 11-8 edge in the fourth period. The victory improved Georgetown’s season record to 14-10 and dropped Cedar Creek to 0-5 in 18-5A and 2-25 on the season. The loss extended CC’s losing streak to 16 games. Both teams shot 36 percent from the floor, but GHS got off 72 attempts — three times as many as their namesakes. The Lady Eagles outrebounded the hosts, 40-18, stole the ball 24 times and forced 21 turnovers. Ten of the 12 Georgetown players scored with senior post Jaelyn Knight and junior guard Hailey Smith each scored 10 points, while juniors Kylee Sander and McCall Hampton both added nine points.
Senior posts Jade Smith and Alicia King had eight and seven rebounds each and Hampton also grabbed seven. Hampton and Hanson each posted four steals. Only four Cedar Park players scored with Eternity Smith and Malia DeShay each scoring six. In the JV game, GHS improved its record to 4-0 in district and 17-2 for the season. The Lady Eagles built a 20-2 lead in the first and was up 46-7 at the half. They added 15 points to the lead in the third quarter and finished with an 8-2 advantage in the final period. Megan Herring, Mercedes Robledo and Lauren Woodard scored 20, 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Lady Eagles. In the Freshman Blue game, GHS built a 45-4 lead in the first half and then outscored Cedar Park 40-0 in the second half to improve to 4-0 in district and 16-2 on the season. Four Lady Eagles scored in double figures — Brielle Maxwell 14, Sheila Lee 12, Dylann Jones 10 and Jacqui Spencer 10. The JV and freshman games Tuesday are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The freshman will play in Eagle Gym with the Freshman Blue set in the auxiliary gym. The Freshman White improved its record to 6-4 with a 38-30 victory at Jarrell on Thursday. Sheila Lee led GHS with 15 points. The White will play at Copperas Cove in Eagle Gym at 6 p.m. Monday.
