Georgetown’s Lady Eagles basically took their offensive game outside to turn Hutto inside out Tuesday night with with a 63-28 victory and set up an extremely interesting final night of the first round of District 18-5A girls competition. The results — with GHS playing host to East View at 6 p.m. and Manor visiting Hutto at 7 p.m. — should result in a perfect 6-0, 5-1 and 4-2 finish among the top three teams at the midpoint of the race. The fourth place team will be at 3-3. Meeting in the opening half of a girls-boys doubleheader, the Lady Eagles and Patriots will take the Eagle Gym court with identical 5-0 records. In this one-sided series, East View has never beaten Georgetown in girls basketball. A few miles down the toll road in Hippo country, Hutto and Manor will both tipoff with 3-2 marks. Also. Elgin and Bastrop will collide for fifth and sixth place in Bear Country as both own 1-4 marks. Last-place Bastrop Cedar Creek will have the bye with an 0-6 mark, having been outscored by an average of 41.3 points per district start. GHS and East View also both stand 15-10 on the season with the Lady Eagles having outscored their five previous 18-5A opponents, 303-176, while the Patriots own a 211-150 edge over the game district foes:

Which school is able to dictate the tempo of play and East View’s ability to control Georgetown’s inside duo of senior Jaelyn Knight and junior McCall Hampton could be the key factors in the game along with the overall improvement of the Lady Eagles’ guards Graci Harris, Kylie Ellsworth. Samari O’Brien, Ali Isbell, Hailey Smith and Kylee Sander on both offense and defense. With Hutto establishing early that its defensive game plan was directed at minimizing the production of Knight and Hampton inside, Georgetown used its guards as the key weapons in its 35-point victory over the Hippos. For the record, GHS stole the ball 25 time, forced 27 turnovers, posted a 33-14 Edge on the board and held the Hippos to 18 percent (6 of 33) shooting from the floor. They were 0 of 7 beyond the arc. Two of the standout plays in the game were steals by sophomore Harris, who slipped up from behind and picked the ball with flare from the Hippo dribbler. In its five district starts, GHS has held the opposition to 26.8 percent (53 of 198) shooting from the floor. “I was proud of all the kids,” Farney said after the Hutto win, pointing to the fact that the team’s outside shooting was able to carry more of the load as Hampton and Knight were held to a combined total of 14 points. The Lady Eagles got 43 points from its outside performers, including nine 3-pointers with three coming from junior Hailey Smith. GHS’ top scorers were Sander with 12 and Smith with 11.
Hutto never led in the game, trailing 11-7 after one quarter, 28-15 at rhe half and 42-24 after three periods. The Hippos, who were led by Manuella Shomba with 17 of her team’s 28 points. Unique statistics in the game — at least tying school records — were Georgetown not attempting or making a free throw in the game. The Temple-based officiating crew only called four fouls on Hutto, while whistling down GHS 18 times. The Hippos made 16 of 27 free throws. GHS also won both the sub-varsity games with Hutto by large margins as the Georgetown JV and Freshman Blue improved their district marks to 5-0. The JV won 53-24 to raise its season mark to 18-2 as Jordan Stout put down five 3-pointers for 15 points and Lauren Woodard added 14. The Blue jumped its season record to 17-2 in a 73-19 win over the first-year Hippos. Dylann Jones scored 24 points for GHS. In a non-district game Monday, the GHS Freshman White, now 7-4, Copperas Cove, 41-25, behind 22 points by Morgan Larson. Because of the unusual varsity doubleheader format against East View, the JV teams will play at 7:30 p.m. in the GHS lower Gym. The freshman games between the Lady Eagles and Patriots are set for Saturday at Eagle Gym. The Blue will play at 10 a.m. and the White at 11:30 a.m.
