Tuesday was a profitable night for the 17th-ranked Georgetown Lady Eagles as they expanded their lead to two games in the District 18-5A race and came within a win over on Elgin Friday of clinching their 29th consecutive trip to the state playoffs. Coach Rhonda Farney’s Lady Eagles, who claimed a 57-30 win over home-standing Bastrop Tuesday night, making it impossible for either the Lady Bears or Bastrop Cedar Creek from finishing ahead of them in the final district standings. At 7 p.m. Friday at Eagle Gym, Georgetown, now 17-10 on the season and 7-0 in 18-5A, can take struggling Elgin (1-5) out of the Lady Eagles’ playoff equation. In the first meeting between GHS and the Lady Wildcats at Elgin, Georgetown claimed a 51-31 despite a slow start.
The Lady Eagles’ 27-point win over Bastrop combined with fourth-place Manor’s 41-34 upset over East View on the Patriots’ court on Tuesday lifted GHS to a two-game advantage over East View and Hutto, which now share the No. 2 spot at 5-2. Manor is close behind at 4-3. “I’m excited about us getting off to the 6-0 start (in the first half)and continuing to win in the first game of the second half,” Farney said. “We showed a lot of energy in tonight’s game.” After playing Elgin, the Lady Eagles will have their second-round bye on Tuesday before returning to action on Friday, Jan. 25, at Manor, which now stands 12-11 on the year. GHS claimed a 53-40 win over the Lady Mustangs in the first-half meeting between the two. Following the Manor contest, GHS will close out the regular season on the road against Hutto, at home with Cedar Creek and on the road at East View. GHS needs to win three of its remaining games — regular season or playoffs — to post its 30th consecutive 20-win season.
In the win over Bastrop, in the dim, chilly Lady Bears gym, GHS led 11-4 after the first period and stretched the lead to 30-15 by halftime. The Lady Eagles added two more points to extend its lead to 42-25 after three quarters. Georgetown outscored Bastrop, 15-5, in the fourth quarter, including the final eight points of the game. Junior post McCall Hampton led the Lady Eagles with 15 points and six rebounds and senior post Jaelyn Knight and junior guard Kylie Ellsworth added 11 and 10 points respectively. GHS posted a 37-22 edge on the boards with senior Samari O’Brien pulling down nine rebounds as well as playing a tight defensive game on Bastrop junior scoring-leader Kewaysha Alsup, who finished with 15 points. O’Brien also had a game-high seven steals for a defense that picked the Lady Bears’ pockets 20 times. In addition to being ranked 17th in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 5A poll, the Lady Eagles were ranked 12th in the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll.
The Georgetown JV and Freshman Blue also improved their 18-5A records to 7-0 with their second one-sided victories of the season over Bastrop. Holding the Bastrop JV two just two points in the final 22 minutes of the game, the GHS JV posted a 65-8 victory to jump its season mark to 20-2. Jordan Stout, scoring four 3-pointers, led the Lady Eagles with 12 points and Bailey Miller added 11 points to lead a balanced attack. The Freshman Blue, now 19-2 on the season, jumped to a 33-3 halftime lead en route to the victory. Jacqui Spencer led GHS with 19 points, while Sheila Lee scored 14 points and Brielle Maxwell and Dylann Jones each added 13 each.
