Georgetown and Waco Midway will tip-off their seasons at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Eagle Gym. The Lady Eagles, who began the campaign ranked 22nd by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and 10th by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, were scheduled to open their season at Round Rock Cedar Ridge on Saturday, but that game was nixed for “non-Covid-19 reasons.”

However, Georgetown’s three sub-varsity teams jumped into action on Saturday. The JV got off to a hot start with a 68-22 win over Cedar Ridge, while the Freshman Blue dropped a 32-16 decision to Cedar Ridge and the Freshman White fell 25-22 to the new Lake Belton High School in the Belton ISD. Coach Corey Cunningham’s GHS JV jumped to a 37-6 halftime lead with four of his nine players scoring in double figures — Brooke White, 15 points; Amiya Gonzales and Madelyne Furr, 12 points each, and Taylor Meyners, 11 points. The Lady Eagles completed the rout with 31 additional points in the second half. “The girls came out with a lot of energy and took control of the game from the beginning and never looked back,” Cunningham said of the JV victory. ” Every player contributed to the winning effort.  It was a great start to the season!”

In the Freshman Blue contest GHS got off to a slow start, scoring just one field goal in the initial quarter and two free throws in the second period, trailing Cedar Ridge, 32-4, at the half. They were outscored 27-12 in the second half. Ava Linyard led Georgetown scoring with seven points. The Freshman White led 11-5 at the half, holding Lake Belton scoreless in the first quarter, but were out-pointed 20-11 in the second half. Mariah Noel had seven points for Georgetown. “The Freshmen this year have little experience but a great urgency to learn the game of basketball,” Freshman Blue coach Katie Youngblood said. “I look forward to seeing their growth and improvement over the season.” As for the Freshman White, coach Tosha Doherty said, “The Freshman White team came out strong showing several things that had been practiced. Opening the first quarter with a 8-0 lead. The Lady Eagle led the entire game, but too many unforced turnovers resulted in a three-point loss in their season opener. We are going to continue to get better, and make adjustments to prepare for Jarrell on Tuesday night.”

On Wednesday, the JV and Freshman Blue will play at 5:30 p.m. The Freshman White was scheduled to play Jarrell on Tuesday night. After playing Midway, the Lady Eagles will play four games at Austin Westwood on Saturday. The Varsity is scheduled for 1 p.m. with the JV and Freshman Blue at 11:30 a.m. The Freshman White is set for a 10:30 a.m. start.
