It may not have the proficiency of a bounce than a super ball possessed, but the Georgetown Lady Eagles rebounded nicely on Saturday with a 56-38 win over 6A Round Rock McNeil after dropping a 50-44 decision to 5A worthy Bryan Rudder on Friday. Both games were played at Eagle Gym. Coach Rhonda Farney’s Lady Eagles, who now stand 4-1, will leave their friendly base of operations this week for three road games, including a 12:30 p.m. game Tuesday against the Round Rock Lady Dragons. On Friday, they will venture to Austin for a noon game with Pflugerville Connally and then move over to Austin Vandegrift at 7 p.m. Saturday.

“I was happy that we were able to bounce back the way we did,” Farney said of the back-to-back weekend games. “We seemed to be off our game early against Rudder and its athleticism, but we came back and almost caught them in the fourth quarter. We turned the ball over way too many times early in that game. “Despite holding two of our guards (juniors Jacqui Spencer and Sam Folsom) out of the Saturday game to rest them for Monday’s state cross country meet, we did what we needed to get it done.”  When GHS takes the court Tuesday against Round Rock, which stands 2-2 on the season, they will be playing a team that dropped a 74-49 battle with 6A Lake Travis on Monday. The Dragons’ other loss was by 18 points to Harker Heights and the wins over Austin Anderson (78-44) and Pflugerville Connally (69-63).

In the loss to Rudder, which is picked to finish second in the rugged District 19-5A, the Lady Eagles turned the ball over 26 times but had 40 rebounds. “You never think you’ll lose when you get 40 rebounds,” Farney said of Friday’s contest. The Lady Rangers jumped to a 12-point lead (15-3) nine minutes into the game as GHS could only manage a field goal by Spencer and a free throw by Harris. Georgetown began working its way back and trailed only 25-18 at the half a tree by Jordyn Stout and two baskets by Megan Herring helped close the gap. Rudder advanced the lead to 14 points at 41-27 with 7:04 remaining in the non-district outing, but GHS began pulling back into the game. They trailed by five points with 46 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws by Ella Vickers. A field goal by Graci Harris sliced the lead to four with nine seconds left, but time expired.

Harris led GHS scoring with 13 points, while Stout had three 3-pointers for nine points. Sheila Lee had 10 rebounds and 6-foot-4 Niah Williams added eight. The Lady Eagles shot 37 percent from the floor (15 of 38). Georgetown got off to a much faster start against the Lady Mustangs (1-5) jumping to a 24-6 lead with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter. The half ended with GHS up 35-10. The Lady Eagles led by 20 (48-18) after three quarters and never let the lead slip under 16 points.

Defensively, GHS did not allow McNeil a double-digit scorer with eight points being the maximum output for a team that shot just 33 percent (15 of 45). The Lady Eagles shot 57 percent from the floor with Williams and Harris each scoring 12 points. Williams also had seven rebounds and five steals and Harris had six assists and six rebounds.

The unbeaten GHS JV (6-0) continued to overrun opponents this past weekend as they crunched Bryan Rudder, 75-44, on Friday and Round Rock McNeil, 69-24, on Saturday. Georgetown placed four players in double digits in both games. Taylor Meyners had 16 against Rudder and Brooke White, Erica Ramthun, and Madelyne Furr, in order, added 14, 13, and 11 points. Against McNeil, Meyners had 18, Amiya Gonzales 16, Ramthun 13, and Furr 11. The JV will play twice this week — at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at Round Rock and 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Vandegrift. The Freshman Blue improved its record to 4-1 on Saturday with a 48-7 blitzing of the first-year Lady Mustangs. Lucy Waring scored 21 points and Ava Linyard and Caroline Rutledge added 10 and nine points, respectively. Coach Katie Youngblood’s Blue will play road games twice this week — Round Rock at 10 a.m. Tuesday and Vandegrift at 4 p.m. Friday. In the nightcap of Friday’s tripleheader, the Freshman White lost a 39-30 decision to China Spring to fall to 1-3 for the season. GHS, which led 18-17 at the half, was outscored 22-12 in the second half.  Anna Eddy topped Lady Eagles’ scoring with eight points, while Melodi Valdez and Maddee Sherbrook added seven points each. The Freshman White has no games scheduled this week.
