When the Georgetown Lady Eagles exited the playing surface at East View Tuesday night after a 47-32 win over the Lady Patriots, they were where they wanted to be in the District 25-5A race — 3-0. But, Covid-19 quarantines at Leander and No. 16 Leander Rouse have removed two other scheduled 25-5A opponents from the Lady Eagles’ pre-Christmas-break workload. Those delayed contests currently have been moved to the final day of 2020 (at Rouse) and the second day of 2021 (Leander at Eagle Gym). To fill that two-week span that includes the UIL’s five-day moratorium on games and practices during the holiday period, GHS has added two non-district games at Eagle Gym with — on the basis of season records and state rankings — two worthy opponents — Buda Hays at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Boerne at 2 p.m. Monday.

After the break, GHS will return to competition against 6A Copperas Cove at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29.  A non-district game with 6A Temple on Wednesday, Dec. 30, has been dropped from the schedule. The Lady Eagles are scheduled to resume the regular 25-5A slate when they entertain Liberty Hill, also currently under a Covid-19 quarantine, on Tuesday, Jan. 5. They then will complete the first round of district play at Cedar Park, currently ranked No. 1 in the state in both major polls, on Friday, Jan. 8. Both Hays and Boerne will bring successful credentials to Eagle Gym. The 6A Hays Rebels will bring an 8-3 record into Friday’s contest, while 4A Boerne was 10-1 prior to its Friday outing with San Antonio Incarnate Word. The Lady Greyhounds are ranked fifth in 4A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and 18th by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. As for state rankings, the Lady Eagles, 10-2 on the year after the win over East View, stand eighth in 5A according to the TGCA and ninth by the TABC.

With three games on the first three playing dates in 25-5A KO’d by the pandemic, GHS stands alone atop the race with a 3-0 record with Cedar Park second at 1-0. Rouse and Leander Glenn are tied for third at 2-1 after the Lady Grizzlies upset the state-ranked Lady Raiders, 52-50, this past TuesdayGeorgetown’s victory over East View ended a two-game losing streak to the Lady Patriots, who won both of last season’s matchups by a total of three points. “It’s always good to get a win here and I’m pleased we are 3-0 in the district,” GHS coach Rhonda Farney said. “We didn’t start the game with a lot of energy and we’ve got a couple of players nursing nagging injuries (including 6-foot-4 junior post-Niah Williams). “I thought (senior) Megan Herring played well for us and Ella (junior guard Vickers), Jordyn (senior guard Stout), and Morgan (junior guard Larson) gave us lifts with 3-pointers when we needed it. Ella and Jacqui (junior guard) Spencer are providing us with good results alternating at that position.”

The Lady Eagles did not have one of their better shooting nights at 37.2 percent (16 of 43) and had nobody score in double digits. Nine of the 10 players, who took the court for GHS scored, with senior point guard Graci Harris and Stout, with a trio of treys, both finishing with nine points. Herring and Vickers each added six points. East View also struggled in marksmanship with only nine baskets in 39 attempts (23 percent). The Lady Patriots’ Erin Holmes was the game’s leading scorer with 12 points. GHS also took a 31-21 edge on the boards, including 11 off the offensive glass, with Larson and Herring each pulling down six. East View turned the ball over 27 times as compared to 17 for the Lady Eagles. Spencer and Herring each had three steals for Georgetown and 6-1 junior Sheila Lee had two of the Lady Eagles’ three blocks.

The Lady Eagles fell behind 11-5 in the first quarter, but a 3-pointer by Stout with three seconds left in the first period knotted the score at 14-14. A 3-pointer by Vickers put GHS ahead for good at 17-14 with 1:08 having run off the clock in the second quarter. A second trey by Vickers expanded the lead to 10 with less than two minutes to go in the half, but East View rebounded to trail only 26-21 at the half. Georgetown scored nine of the first 11 points in the third quarter with a 3-pointer by Larson pushing the lead to 13 points at 35-22. From that point on, the Lady Eagles never allowed the lead to fall under 11 points. The loss dropped East View to 1-2 in the district and 8-4 for the season. Georgetown and East View are scheduled to play again on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Eagle Gym.

Georgetown’s sub-varsity teams continued to roll as the JV and Freshman Blue both won to push their 25-5A marks to 3-0.  The JV posted a 55-22 win and the Blue claimed a 49-19 win. The JV improved its perfect mark to 13-0 as Taylor Meyners and Brooke White scored 16 and 11 points, respectively.  Erica Ramthun added nine points for GHS. Lucy Waring, who had 34 points in the Blue’s previous win over Marble Falls, continued her torrid pace with 25 points against East View. In a game the Blue led 30-7 at the half, Ava Linyard supported Waring with 13 points. The JV will play once in the coming week as it will face Boerne at 12:30 p.m. on Monday and the Blue will play host to Lampasas at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.  The Freshman White will face Salado twice — at 5:15 p.m. Friday in Eagle Gym and then travel to Salado for a 9 a.m. outing on Monday.
