Fourth-ranked Georgetown and Boerne Champion, a pair of teams coming off of one-sided victories in Region IV-5A area tests this past Saturday, will collide at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Buda Hays in a contest that will advance the winner to the regional semifinals. Coach Rhonda Farney’s Lady Eagles (24-4) bested 28-5A champion Castroville Medina Valley, 53-26, at Buda Johnson, while the Lady Chargers (21-3) posted a 75-44 victory over San Antonio Southside, the third-place team from 28-5A, in a pair of games pushed back from their original dates by the severe winter storm.
Both Georgetown and Champion were the second-seeded finishers in their districts with two losses. The Lady Eagles’ district losses were both to No. 1-ranked Cedar Park, while the Lady Chargers fell to New Braunfels Canyon and San Antonio Veterans Memorial, which lost to GHS, 42-32, in bi-district. The showdown between the Lady Eagles and Lady Chargers will be the opening game of a rare playoff doubleheader for one school. Coach David Canfield’s 25-5A co-champion Eagles (19-7, 12-2) will play Alamo Heights (14-10, 10-3) in a bi-district pairing at 8 p.m. The gym will be cleared between games and fans will need to purchase separate tickets for each game. The Georgetown-Boerne Champion winner will play either District 31-5A champion Sharyland Pioneer (19-2, 14-0) or 29-5A runner-up Victoria East (20-4, 13-3) in the Region IV-5A semifinals, which probably will be played Friday on a neutral site. The Lady Diamondbacks and Lady Titans are scheduled to collide at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Miller High School in Corpus Christi.
In the game with Medina Valley, a 21-3 run in which the visiting Lady Panthers only scored three free throws, elevated Georgetown into a dominant position, increasing a 7-5 edge to 28-8 with 1:33 remaining in the first half, which ended with the Lady Eagles on top 30-10. After a 7-7 standoff over the first six and a half minutes of the third quarter, GHS completed the rout by outscoring Medina Valley, 16-9, over the final nine minutes. Farney substituted freely, including three players up from the junior varsity in the final minute. The GHS defense completely frustrated the San Antonio-area team, holding the Lady Panthers, which finished their season at 24-4, to just 19 percent shooting from the floor (nine of 47 attempts), posted a 40-18 rebounding edge, made six fewer turnovers and took a 21-8 edge in steals. The Lady Eagles disrupted Medina Valley’s offense as a sizeable number of its shots missed the mark by large margins. The rebound margin destroyed a portion of the 28-5A champions’ game that they felt was a major key to their success.
While no Medina Valley player scored in double figures and only two had seven or more points, GHS, shooting 50 percent (20 of 40 attempts), was led by 6-4 junior center Niah Williams and 5-7 senior point guard Graci Harris with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Williams also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds and blocked four shots. Harris topped the steals chart with six and dished out seven assists. “I’m so happy,” Farney said after the game. “We executed the game plan. I thought Graci played really well. We are so excited that we are through to the regional quarterfinal round where there are 32 of 128 girls playoff teams still playing in 5A” “We were really motivated by not getting past the area round for several years,” answered 5-10 senior forward Lauren Woodard. “We expected them (Medina Valley) to play aggressively and they did.” Looking at Boerne Champion, the Lady Chargers, who only lost to San Antonio Antonian, New Braunfels Canyon, and San Antonio Veterans Memorial during the regular season, posted a victory margin of 23.8 for the season, including 26.1 reading in 16 district games.
Champion is led offensively by 6-0 senior forward Hannah Barraza (12.8 ppg.) and senior point guard Addison King (10.8 ppg). The leading rebounder is a 6-0 junior Khiara Flugence, who has a total of 153 boards. The two schools have three opponents in common — Marble Falls, San Antonio Veterans Memorial, and Leander Glenn. GHS is 5-0 against the trio, while Boerne Champion stands 3-1 against the three. Playing against Georgetown’s district rival Glenn in the bi-district, the Lady Chargers squeezed out a 59-58 victory. Farney will count Champion with a starting lineup of Harris, 5-9 junior Jacqui Spencer, 5-7 senior Morgan Larson, Woodard and Williams with 4-5 junior guard Ella Vickers, 5-5 junior guard Sam Folsom, 5-8 senior guard Jordyn Stout, 5-9 senior forward Megan Herring and 6-1 junior center Sheila Lee.
Playoff Notebook: Thinking about potential playoff distances for the regional semifinals? GHS and Sharyland Pioneer are 354.7 miles apart (a 5-hour and 11-minute drive) and GHS and Victoria are separated by 153.6 miles of Texas (approximately 2 1/2 hours).
