Holy Innocents Episcopal of Atlanta jumped to a 35-12 halftime lead en route to a 52-36 victory over the Georgetown Lady Eagles on Wednesday on the second -day of competition in the Carolina Invitational at Charleston, S.C.
The victory by the Golden Bears, who are ranked 13th in Georgira by Max Preps, improved their record to 13-1 and snapped the Lady Eagles’ winning streak at nine games. GHs took a 14-6 record into its Thursday’s tournament finale with Northwood Academy of Summerville, S.C. The Chargers had lost to both Holy Innocents, 47-41, and St. John’s Catholic, Md., 43-42, in their first two tournament outings.
The athletic Golden Bears outscored the Lady Eagles, 19-8, in the first quarter and then took most of the drama out of the contest in the second period, positing a 16-4 edge. Georgetown only managed a 3-pointer by senior Brooke Elliott and a free throw by freshman Emery Herman in the period.
GHS posted a 24-17 edge in the second half.
Holy Inmocents collected 34 of their points from a pair of juniors — 6-foot Kennedy Suttle, who had 19 points and 12 rebounds and 5-10 Kaila Hubbard , who scored 15 points. Suttle, who shot 8 of 12 from the floor, scored nine in the first half and 10 in the second.
The Golden Bears, handing GHS its most-one-sided loss of the campaign, got off 49 shots, making 21, but were only made one of nine from beyond the arc. The Lady Eagles made 23 turnaovers. Georgetown largest previous losing margin was 15 points in a 51-36 loss to Class 6a Pflugerville on the Lady Panthers’ hardwoods in mid-November.
Senior post Dee Day and sophomore post Emily Jones led GHS scoring with 11 points each with the 5-10 Jones grabbing a personal season-high 12 rebounds. The Lady Eagles made just 13 of their 35 shots from the floor, but posted a 32-31 edge on the boards. B. Elliott added eight points, four assists. four rebounds and three steals.
The loss was costly for the Lady Eagles as junior guard Maddie Vickers suffered what was termed a “severe ankle sprain.”
