Ninth-ranked Georgetown and East View remained tied for the District 18-5A girls basketball race at 7-1 after victories Friday. In what Lady Eagles coach Rhonda Farney described as a “very physical game” at Elgin, GHS posted a 42-26 victory over the Lady Wildcats and the Patriots survived a serious upset bid in Manor in overtime by 60-56 count. This week the Lady Eagles, 22-8 on the season, and Patriots, 22-4 for the year, will play one district game and take their open dates in the seven-team alignment, Neither GHS or East View will be overlooking their single opponents this week. Tuesday night, with Georgetown taking the night off, most of the attention in 18-5A will be on Hutto where the fourth-place Lady Hippos (4-3, 12-20) entertains East View. The Patriots’ only district loss was to Hutto, 45-36, on December 20 as the fell behind 31-13 at the half and could make up the difference in the second half. Since that burp in their record, the Patriots have won seven straight.
The situation will reverse itself on Friday. East View will have its district bye, while Georgetown plays host to a Manor team that made a strong comeback against the Lady Eagles on the Lady Mustangs’ court on Tuesday, Jan. 7. GHS survived with a 47-42 victory in their first game back from the holiday break. Manor, which lost 56-42 to third-place Bastrop on Friday, plays Elgin (0-7) on Tuesday in Manor. “Anytime we get a win in this gym its a good thing,” Farney said after the victory over the Lady Wildcats. “This is a tough place to play. One of the big keys for us was that we played with a lot of energy on defense. There were distractions.” The contest was anything but routine as an Elgin fan in the stands had what was described as “a seizure.” The start of the second half was held up at least 15 minutes while emergency medical personnel performed their duties. During the delay both teams shot and loosened up in an adjacent gym.
Georgetown jumped to a 16-2 lead in the first quarter against Elgin with senior guard Kylee Sander providing six of the points. However, the Lady Wildcats outscored GHS, 9-6, in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 22-11.
In the third period, the Lady Eagles outscored Elgin, 14-6, with senior guard Kylie Ellsworth draining a pair of 3-pointers. Elgin posted a 9-6 edge in the fourth quarter, but was unable to pull closer than 14 points with 4:40 to go in the game on a basket by McCall Hampton. Georgetown’s largest lead was 20 points at 38-18. Neither team scorched the nets. GHS shot 34 percent (16 of 47) and Elgin hit 24.3 percent of its shots (nine of 34). The Lady Wildcats missed all 10 of their 3-point attempts. GHS posted 29-21 rebounding edge with Hampton grabbing nine and Mackenzy Mouton six. The Lady Eagles forced 30 turnovers with Sander having nine of her team’s 20 steals. Georgetown also blocked four shots. Sandler led all scores with 12 points and Tasha Stafford had 10 for Elgin.
In the only preliminary game Friday, the GHS JV, improving to 15-8 on the season and 7-0 in 18-5A, ran past Elgin, 75-5, with guards Jacqui Spencer and Morgan Larson leading the Lady Eagles with 25 and 17 points, respectively. Eight GHS players scored in a game that saw them lead 39-1 at the half and 51-3 before Elgin scored its only basket of the game with 3:20 left in the third quarter. With Elgin having canceled the freshman contest, the undefeated Freshman Blue, 23-0 on the year and 6-0 in district, downed Lampasas, 42-15, in a non-district game Saturday morning. Taylor Meyners and Madelyne Furr each scored nine points to lead GHS.
The Freshman White, now 7-8, one one of three games in a round-robin tournament with Salado, Jarrell and Belton on Saturday in the GHS auxiliary gym. The White took a 29-22 win over Belton, but lost to Salado, 40-36, and Jarrell, 27-17. Payton Humphrey had the high game of the day for the White with 13 points against Salado. With the open date, the JV and Freshman teams will scrimmage each other on Tuesday afternoon.
A SPECIAL NIGHT: The Lady Eagles program will honor Erica Kovach, arguably, the best player to ever wear the royal and white here at GHS at the varsity pregame on Friday night. She holds numerous records, but what sets her apart is her competitiveness and will to win. The ceremony is set for 6:55 p.m. Kovach played for the Lady Eagles from the 2000 season to 2003 when she led GHS to the UIL state finals as a senior. LADY EAGLES NOTEBOOK: Former GHS basketball and softball standout Avery Kelly is one of three Mary Hardin-Baylor softball players named to the American Southwest Conference Preseason Watch List. Kelly, a senior for the Crusaders, hit .312 last season. She topped UMHB with seven home runs and drove in a team-best 29 runs on the year. . . . GHS sophomore Brielle Maxwell, a member of the Lady Eagles’ JV, has dropped out of basketball to concentrate on volleyball . . . In addition to honoring Kovach, it will be Middle School Night on Friday, honoring the eighth grade teams at Benold and Forbes.
