Junior Brooke Bullard’s successful 3-point shot from beyond the top of the key with two seconds remaining gave East View a 42-41 victory over eighth-ranked Georgetown and the District 18-5A championship Tuesday night at a packed Eagle Gym. Like spilled milk it’s well past the time for tears and it can’t be wiped away by the superior paper towels in television commercials. Time goes forward as do the University Interscholastic League Class 5A state playoffs, which begin next Monday and Tuesday. The top-seeded Patriots (26-5) will play Pflugerville (14-18), the fourth-place team in 18-5A, in bi-district at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Leander Rouse, while the second-seeded Lady Eagles (25-8) will face either Marble Falls (16-13) or Pflugerville Connally (24-11) in the opening round on either Monday or Tuesday. The Lady Mustangs and Lady Cougars, who tied for second in 18-5A at 9-3, will play off their deadlock at 6:30 p.m. in Marble Falls. The loser of that showdown will play Georgetown, while the winner will play Bastrop (15-16). If Connally loses, GHS will play the Cougs at 7 p.m. Monday at Leader, but if the Falls fall, the Lady Eagles will try to knock the marble out of the ring at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Leander.
If GHS plays Connally, it will be the visitor. If it faces Marble Falls, it will be the home team. The winner of the Georgetown versus Marble Falls/Pflugerville Connally game will advance to the area round of the playoffs next weekend against either 19-5A champion College Station (26-7) or Humble Kingwood Park (18-15), the fourth-place team in 20-5A. That bi-district pairing is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Bridgeland High School in Cypress. On the brighter side this past Monday and Tuesday nights, the unbeaten GHS Freshman Blue (29-0) and JV (21-6) competed 11-0 runs through 18-5A en route to district championships. If fact, Georgetown’s sub-varsity teams have compiled a two-year record of 48-0 in 18-5A. (See complete articles on the Freshman Blue and GHS JV in the future). “We didn’t play our best basketball in the final one minute and 46 seconds,” Georgetown head coach Rhonda Farney said. “They made a great shot to win the game. But that game is not going to define our season and it didn’t end our season. That would be a tough way to end a season.”
Let’s walk back through the final minutes of East View’s second win of the season and their only two in 16 games with the Lady Eagles. The Patriots’ Portis Leathers deadlocked the game at 39-39 With 3:41 to go. Georgetown, playing a ball-control game got two free throws by senior guard Kylie Ellsworth to take a 41-37 lead with 42 seconds to go. With 19 seconds remaining junior guard Graci Harris missed the front end of a one-and-one. Then with 16 seconds still to play. Georgetown’s Kylee Sander and East View’s Hailey Smith collided and tempers flared. Both players were given technical fouls and Smith was sent to the line to shoot the personal foul on the play. Hanson, who played at GHS before moving to EV for her senior year, put down both shots to close the gap to 41-39. The Lady Eagles in-bounded the ball and Ellsworth was immediately fouled, but she missed both shots with 15 seconds to play. Thirteen seconds later Bullard hit the deciding 3-pointer. GHS passed the ball in, but a long attempt by McCall Hampton was short of the mark.
Despite finishing second to East View in the district chase by a one-game margin (11-1 to 10-2), Georgetown was advancing to the state playoffs for the 30th consecutive season. The championship was the Lady Patriots’ first in their eight-year varsity history under coach Dave Walla, who once was a GHS assistant coach. In a game, which went with an eight-player rotation led 13-8 after the first quarter and 26-25 at the half as two free throws by Ellsworth brought GHS from behind. The Lady Eagles were up 37-31 after three quarters with one of the key plays being an over-the-back shot by Ellsworth. However, they scored only four points in the final period. Georgetown’s last field goal of the game was by senior post Makenzy Mouton with 4:02 left in the game. Harris and Ellsworth led GHS scoring with 13 and 11 points, respectively, as the Lady Eagles only got 11 points out of their fout post players. Je’Niece Williams and Smith led EastView with nine points each and Mary Brown added nine. If EastView beats Pflugerville in bi-district it will play either 19-5A runner-up Magnolia West (28-8) or Montgomery Lake Creek (21-9), the third-place team in 20-5A. West and Lake Creek will play at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Magnolia High School. Continuing the what if game, the odds are that Georgetown would play Huntsville (22-7) in the Region III-5A quarterfinals and East View would face second-ranked Cedar Park, currently 28-3. Neither team shot well from the field. East View made 12 of 38 and GHS put down 13 of 39 (33 percent). GHS outrebounded EV, 27-16, with Hampton and Ellsworth pulling down six boards each. Ellsworth had three assists and Harris had five steals. Both teams turned the ball over 17 times.
Jane Butler and Taylor Meyners scored 20 and 12 points, respectively, to lead the Freshman Blue to a 67-11 win on Monday and Megan Herring and Shelia Lee scored 18 and 10 points, in the JV’s 54-32 win on Tuesday.
