If you are a devotee to point spreads and their characteristics, the Georgetown Lady Eagles’ four-game sweep on Monday night had some interesting aspects. In three contests with Class 3A Lorena — varsity, junior varsity, and Freshman Blue — and one with the first-year school Lake Belton — Freshman White – – GHS outscored the opposition, 205-74. For the opponents, no team scored more than 22 points and no individual player scored more than seven points and 16 of the 25 scoring opponents had three points or less. For the record, the Lady Eagles prevailed 54-22 on the varsity level, the JV rolled 63-20, the Freshman Blue won 44-10 and the Freshman White reversed an earlier loss to Lake Belton, 44-22. The first-year Broncos had won the first meeting, 25-22.
One of the major events affecting Lady Eagles basketball this week came late Monday with it being determined that Round Rock Stony Point would suspend on-campus in-person learning and extra-curricular activities through the end of the month because of pandemic precautions. Stony Point was scheduled to play varsity, JV, and Freshman Blue games with GHS at Eagle Gym. GHS coach Rhonda Farney was able to replace the Lady Tigers with Class 5A Bryan Rudder, which is picked to finish second to College Station in District 19-5A. Game times Friday have been changed. The varsity will play at 6:30 p.m. following the 5 p.m. JV contest. As of the current time, the Freshman White will play China Spring at 7:30 p.m. in the auxiliary gym. Also, Saturday’s scheduled tripleheader with Round Rock McNeil stands firm at this time with the JV and Freshman Blue playing at 4 p.m. with the varsity to follow at 5:30 p.m. The Freshman White is not scheduled to play on Saturday.
In another move, Georgetown’s scheduled road games with Austin Vandegrift have been moved from Monday, Nov. 23, to Saturday, Nov. 28, because of the UIL State Cross Country Meet Monday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Three members of the Lady Eagles basketball team are members of the XC team — juniors Jacqui Spencer, Sam Folsom, and Morgan Larson. “It was a good night all around for us on the court,” Farney said. “With Jacqui twisting her ankle Monday in practice and the state meet coming up we didn’t want to aggravate it so we held her out. Also, another JV player was out of the rotation Monday, so coach (Corey) Cunningham only had seven players since Brooke White was called up to give us plenty of guard depth on the varsity.
“I’m pleased with the way our freshmen are progressing. Coach (Katie) Youngblood’s Freshman Blue has won three-straight games. Caroline Rutledge’s arrival from volleyball is making a difference. It was really nice to see the Freshman White under coach (Tosha) Doherty flip the situation with Lake Belton after losing their first meeting. “Also, the varsity game was much different than last year when we barely won, 35-27, in Lorena after trailing 16-10 at the half with McCall Hampton scoring 22 of our points.” Except for a 3-pointer by each team in the first 90 seconds, the varsity game this season started as a drag race by two vintage vehicles that had their rear wheels stuck in 18 inches of mud. GHS led 9-8 after the first quarter but trailed 10-9 nearly 9 1/2 minutes into the game. However, the Lady Eagles exited the “mud” over the remainder of the first half with a surge that outscored Lorena, 15-4. Junior guard Ella Vickers led the push, scoring all nine of her points in the period with two 3-pointers and three free throws,
In the third quarter, the Lady Leopards (2-2) were outscored 15-4 with the Lady Eagles’ advantage expanding to 43-18 with junior centers Niah Williams and Sheila Lee each accounting for four points. Georgetown’s largest lead of the night was the final 32 points as senior guard Jordyn Stout hit a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining in the game.
All 10 players who took the court for GHS scored with senior forward Lauren Woodard being the contest’s only double-digit scorer with 10 points. Lorena’s top scorer had five points as the Lady Leopards only got off 29 shots, making nine. The visitors turned the ball over 30 times. Several of the Lorena players may have nightmares of the 6-foot-4 Williams looming over them. She blocked seven shots and grabbed five rebounds in addition to scoring eight points.
In the win by the undefeated JV (4-0), the Lady Eagles jumped to a 21-4 lead after one quarter and upped the margin to 40-8 by the half. Taylor Meyners, Jane Butler, and Erica Ramthun led the charge with point totals of 16, 12, and 11, respectively. Natalie Rivera added nine in a game in which GHS put down seven 3-pointers. The Freshman Blue combined its power and size inside from Lucy Waring (16 points) and Aspen Mayo (12 points) with running and pressure by Rutledge (11 points) to improve to 3-1. After holding the Leopards scoreless in the opening quarter, GHS allowed just 10 points.
The Freshman White built a 32-6 lead with Melodi Valdez scoring 12 of her game-high 14 points in the first half, Mariah Noel added 12 points.
