With a Covid-19 quarantine in the Leander program, Georgetown’s Lady Eagles will play only one varsity game this week and it is big both psychologically and in the District 25-5A standings. The Lady Eagles, ranked eighth or ninth in 5A depending on your choice of polls, will try to improve their record to 3-0 in the district when they visit arch-rival East View (1-1) at 8 p.m. Tuesday. On the mental side, GHS will be trying to beat an opponent that defeated them twice last season by a total of three points to win the 18-5A title. Coach Rhonda Farney’s Lady Eagles stand 9-2 on the season, including Friday’s 59-39 win over Marble Falls in the Lady Mustangs’ corral. East View, which is coached by former GHS assistant Dave Walla, is coming off a 48-47 loss at Leander Glenn, a team Georgetown downed 59-34 in its district opener. The Patriots are 8-3 on the season.
The Georgetown-Leander game, which was scheduled for Friday night in Eagle Gym, will be made up later in the season with Saturday, Jan. 2, currently listed as a possible playing date. With the Lady Lions currently off the calendar, GHS will have only one 25-5A game remaining this year after East View — 15th or 16th-ranked Leander Rouse, pending your ranking preference. That game is set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, in the Raiders’ gym. The Lady Eagles are scheduled to play a pair of non-district warm-up games with 6A teams after the Christmas break — both at 2 p.m. in Eagle Gym. GHS will tackle Copperas Cove on Dec. 29 and Temple on Dec. 30. They will return to 25-5A action either with the Leander make-up contest on Jan. 2 or an 8 p.m. battle at home with Liberty Hill on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
“Always glad to get a win here,” Farney said of the 20-point victory over Marble Falls, which completed the night’s three-game sweep of the Lady Mustangs’ program. “I continued to be really pleased with our sub-varsity teams and the work done by the coaches in our program. “It’s on to play East View and we have some work to do to get ready.” Georgetown jumped to a 16-4 lead in the first quarter with junior Morgan Larson scoring six of the Lady Eagles’ first 10 points. Senior point guard took over the scoring load in the second period with eight points and guard Ella Vickers add a pair of field goals to make it 30-12 at the half. Marble Falls, 1-8 on the season, tried to work its way back into the game in the third period, outscoring GHS, 15-13, but GHS blunted the comeback attempt by posting a 16-14 edge in the fourth period. Senior forward Lauren Woodard stood firm in the second half with 11 points. For the game, GHS shot 53.3 from the floor (24 of 47), recorded 28 steals as compared to Marble Falls’ six, and turned the ball over 11 fewer times than the Lady Mustangs. GHS had a 22-18 edge on the boards and three blocks. Individually, Woodard and Harris led the scoring with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Larson added a team-high of six rebounds and nine steals. Junior guard Jacqui Spencer added seven points and six steals.

Georgetown’s JV and Freshman Blue outscored Marble Fall’s sub-varsity teams by a combined 125-11 count Friday. In improving to 12-0 for the season, coach Corey Cunningham’s JV posted a 71-6 victory, and coach Katie Youngblood’s Blue rolled to a 54-5 win to raise its season mark to 8-1. Both GHS teams are 2-0 in District 25-5A competition. The Lady Eagles’ Lucy Waring scored a season program individual high in the freshman contest with 34 points. She scored on 16 field goals and two free throws. Working inside for most of her points, Waring scored 14 points in the first half and 20 in the second. Guard Caroline Rutledge supported Waring with 10 points as the GHS defense limited Marble Falls to a very small number of shooting opportunities. The defense shut out the young Lady Mustangs in the second quarter and allowed one point each in the first and fourth quarters.
In the JV contest, the Lady Eagles blanked MF in the fourth quarter and held it to two points each in the first three periods. Taylor Meyers finished with a game-high 15 points, while Avery Lopez scored 12 and Brooke White added 11. The well-balanced attack also had Madelyne Furr with nine points and Jane Butler and Natalie Rivera with eight each. On Tuesday at East View, the Lady Eagles are scheduled to play the Lady Patriots on the freshman level at 5:15 p.m. and in the JV game at 6:30 p.m. Also on the freshman agenda, the White will host Salado at 6:30 p.m. Friday and the Blue will entertain Lampasas at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
