Victories in their next three games can assure the fifth-ranked Georgetown Lady Eagles of their 31st straight appearance in the UIL state playoffs. Considering the current course of the 14-game race, two of the next three probably would earn a postseason berth, but why take a chance? Georgetown currently stands 6-1 at the numerical midpoint of the District 25-5A race after beating Leander Glenn, 53-29, on the road Tuesday night. They are one game behind No. 1-ranked Cedar Park and ahead of Leander Rouse, 3-1 after two stoppages with Covid-19 protocols, and Glenn, 5-3.
The Lady Eagles, 16-3 for the season, will start that three-game push at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Eagle Gym when they face Marble Falls (1-6), a team they beat 59-39 on Dec. 11 in the Lady Mustangs’ corral. They will remain at home Tuesday to play arch-rival East View, (3-4), which faces Glenn on Friday. On Friday, Jan. 22, GHS will visit winless Leander, currently 0-7 in district action. In the first 25-5A meetings with East View and Leander, Georgetown posted a 47-32 win over the Lady Patriots on the road and a 57-23 besting of the Lady Lions at Eagle Gym. In addition to East View and Leander next week, the Lady Eagles are now scheduled for a Saturday, Jan. 23, make-up game with Rouse on the Raiders’ court. The game originally was scheduled for Dec. 22. Georgetown also will celebrate Cancer Warriors’ Night” on Friday.
In Tuesday’s victory over the Lady Grizzlies, who are coached by former GHS assistant coach Jordan Ramey, the Lady Eagles scored the final seven points in the first quarter to claim a 10-4 lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers by senior guard Graci Harris and junior guard Jacqui Spencer helped Georgetown push the lead to 24-14 at the half. The Lady Eagles took complete control of the game in the third quarter as they scored the initial 12 points of the period with trees by junior guards Morgan Larson and Ella Vickers bookended the rally. After outscoring the Griz, 15-3, in the period, the lead swelled to 22 points at 39-17. The largest advantage of the night was 28 points twice in the fourth quarter on baskets by Harris and senior forward Lauren Woodard.
“It was a huge win for us,” Farney said of a game played on the heels of last Friday’s 63-25 loss to Cedar Park. “I’m so proud of all of our players. I’m proud of the effort and of our ability to play strongly after the loss.” The GHS defense was a major factor in the victory as it limited Glenn to just 11 baskets in 47 attempts (23 percent), including just three successes in 20 attempts from beyond the arc. No Glenn played scored more than eight points. The Lady Eagles also posted a 38-26 edge on the boards with junior post-Sheila Lee pulling down 10 and fellow junior Niah Williams having eight. Georgetown also forced 20 turnovers. The balanced GHS offense shot 43 percent from the floor (19 of 44) with a balanced attack that saw Woodard top the scoring chart with 10 points. Lee and Harris each added nine points as 10 of the 13 Georgetown players in the game.
For the third playing date in a row, the undefeated GHS JV (17-0) was unable to take the court because of the opponents’ JV being under a Covid-19 quarantine. Coach Corey Cunningham’s Lady Eagles are scheduled to play East View and Leander at 6:30 p.m. Coach Katie Youngblood’s Freshman Blue improved to 13-2 with a 42-12 victory over Glenn. Lucy Waring led the first-year Lady Eagles with 16 points as Caroline Rutledge and Ava Linyard scored 10 and six, respectively. GHS had beaten Glenn 39-2 in the first meeting.
