After closing out the regular-season schedule with a pair of one-sided victories, fifth-ranked Georgetown will open its 31st consecutive trip to the state playoffs when it faces San Antonio Veterans Memorial in a 5A bi-district contest at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Cibolo Steele High School. The 40-14 victory over Leander on Wednesday and a 49-33 win over Rouse on Thursday enabled Georgetown to complete the 25-5A campaign with a second-place 12-2 record and 22-4 reading for the season. For coach Rhonda Farney’s Lady Eagles it was their 32nd straight 20-win season. The Veterans Memorial Lady Patriots stand 18-7 for the season, including a 12-4 record in 26-5A as they completed the campaign Friday night with a forfeit victory over Kyle Lehman. Veterans Memorial, coached by Tina Camacho, placed third in the district behind New Braunfels Canyon and Boerne Champion.
Steele High School is a member of the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD on the northeastern side of the San Antonio metro area at 1300 FM 1103 in Cibolo, 78108. The GHS-Veterans Memorial winner will advance to the area round of the playoffs next Monday or Tuesday and will face either 28-5A champion Castroville Medina Valley (23-3, 14-0) or San Antonio Sam Houston (12-9, 10-6), the fourth-place team in 27-5A. The statistics easily explain the Lady Eagles’ 35-point victory over Leander. The Lady Lions made only one of 23 attempts from the floor (4 percent), scoring only six points in the first half and eight in the second half. Their lone field goal came with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter. GHS was credited with 30 steals, Leander turned the ball over 34 times and was outrebounded 34-21. GHS held a 26-5 lead at the half and then built the lead to 40-8 after three periods. The largest margin of the night was the final score. Farney was able to rest several of her front-line performers in the game with JV mainstays Brooke White, Taylor Meyners, Madelyne, and Erica Ramthun logging playing time.
While only Maddie Stringer scored more than three points for the Lady Lions with six, 10 of the 14 Lady Eagles hit the scoring column with junior guard Jacqui Spencer leading the way with 12. 6-4 junior post-Niah Williams, senior point guard Graci Harris and junior guard Morgan Larson added eight points each. Williams added nine rebounds and Larson made six steals and Harris added five.
“I’m glad that one is in the books,” Farney said with an expected tough battle with Rouse awaiting the Lady Eagles in approximately 20 hours. “We showed up ready to play.” On Thursday, the Rouse Lady Raiders hoped to celebrate their Senior Night at the expense of the Lady Eagles. However, Georgetown started strong, struggled through the second quarter, and then sprinted to the finish in the second half. “I was proud of the way we played in the second half,” Farney said. “We played with a lot of energy. We’ll take it.” The Lady Eagles took a 10-8 lead in the first quarter and Harris opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer to make it 13-8, but the Lady Raiders charged back with 10 consecutive points to go up 18-13 before a 3-pointer by Spencer allowed GHS to go in at the half down just 20-17.
Georgetown opened the second half with 10 straight points, including treys by Spencer and Jordyn Stout to go up 27-20. Seven of the next nine points pulled Rouse, the hardest hit of the 25-5A teams by the Covid-19 pandemic, back within two at 29-27 with 1:32 to go in the third period. However, back-to-back baskets out front by senior forward Lauren Woodard put the momentum back in the Lady Eagles’ hands with 35 seconds left in the third period that ended with GHS on top, 33-27. “Lauren knocked down those two big baskets and we were on our way,” Farney said. The Lady Eagles put the victory away over the final eight minutes as they outscored the Lady Raiders, 16-6, with the 5-7 Harris putting down a pair of 3-pointers and a two-pointer along with two free throws. Spencer and Harris combined for 29 of Georgetown’s points with Spencer scoring 16 and Harris 13. Woodard added six. Williams had eight rebounds to lead GHS to a 33-22 edge on the boards. She also made four blocks. The Lady Eagles made seven fewer turnovers than the Lady Raiders (17-23). Georgetown held Rouse to 30 percent shooting (13 of 42) and held the opponent’s leading scorer Avonne Justice to nine points.
On the sub-varsity level, the Georgetown JV finished with a 25-0 record, including a 13-0 reading in 25-5A play with a 63-38 win over Leander on Wednesday. Post Madelyne Furr led the Lady Eagles with 24 points, while Avery Lopez and Brooke White added 12 and 11 points, respectively. In the freshman game, Leander upset GHS, 22-15, to drop the young Lady Eagles’ final district mark to 8-1 and a season record of 15-3. Caroline Rutledge and Aspen Mayo led GHS with four points each. “I’m real proud of the win and the season the JV has had,” Farney said. “The freshman got off to a slow start tonight, but fought hard to come back.”
Elsewhere in 25-5A, Glenn claimed third place, and the alignment’s No. 3 playoff seeding with a 45-36 win over Marble Falls on Saturday, giving the Lady Grizzlies an 8-5 mark with one make-up game remaining on Monday. Rouse, a 52-37 winner over East View on Saturday, can claim the fourth position in the final standings at 7-7 on Monday with a win at Marble Falls. However, East View can still deadlock Rouse at 6-8, if the Lady Patriots beat Leander on Monday and the Lady Raiders fall to Marble Falls. Rouse and East View split their season series. EV won the first meeting, 41-36, in mid-January.
